120km (75 miles) up the coast is Malindi, a small city and historical port classic examples of Swahili and colonial Portuguese architecture as well as fine beaches. Neighbouring Watamu is a peaceful village siting in a Marine National Park, a continuous protected coastal area that is held as of the best snorkelling and diving areas in East Africa. It is home to around 600 species of fish and over 100 coral species in usually clear water. Of the larger species, commonly seen are whale sharks, manta rays, octopus, barracuda and occasionally dolphins. The dive season lasts from September through to April, November to January being optimal, and some dives taking place within the reef in August.
