Fascinating facts about Mt. Kilimanjaro

World’s Tallest Free-Standing Mountain

Kilimanjaro is not only Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) but also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Unlike mountain ranges that are connected to other peaks, Kilimanjaro rises majestically on its own from the surrounding plains.

A Unique Volcanic Structure

The mountain has three volcanic cones: Kibo (the highest and dormant), Mawenzi, and Shira. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo remains dormant, with the potential to erupt again in the future.

A Journey Through Climate Zones

Climbing Kilimanjaro is like walking through all the Earth’s climate zones. The trek begins in lush rainforests, transitions through alpine meadows, crosses arid deserts, and culminates in arctic conditions at the glacier-covered summit.

An Inspiration for Hemingway

Kilimanjaro has inspired art and literature, most famously Ernest Hemingway’s short story The Snows of Kilimanjaro. The majestic snow-capped peaks have come to symbolize beauty, adventure, and resilience.

Kilimanjaro comprises three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Uhuru Peak, situated on Kibo, marks the mountain’s highest point. The ascent traverses diverse climate zones, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, culminating in arctic conditions at the summit. This diversity offers climbers a unique and ever-changing landscape throughout their journey.

Selecting the appropriate route is crucial for a successful summit. We offer several options, each with distinct features.

Machame Route

Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it is popular for its scenic beauty and high success rate. Typically completed over 6-7 days, it allows for good acclimatization.

Lemosho Route

Offering stunning vistas and a higher success rate due to longer acclimatization periods, this route is usually undertaken over 7-8 days.

Rongai Route

Approaching from the north, it provides a unique perspective of the mountain and is less crowded. Typically completed over 6-7 days, it offers a moderate acclimatization profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect?

One of Kilimanjaro’s main attractions is that you don’t need to be a seasoned mountaineer to summit Africa’s highest peak. Whether you’re a secretary, farmer, student, retiree, or professional athlete, anyone with determination and a pair of sturdy hiking boots can reach the top. No prior climbing experience or specialized gear is required.

However, don’t be fooled: climbing Kilimanjaro is no easy feat. It’s a demanding trek with fluctuating weather, challenging terrain, and exposure to the elements. But the reward—the sense of achievement and the view from the summit—is worth every ounce of effort.

Your arrival

Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by a Kilimanjaro-Experience driver who will transport you to your hotel. A thorough pre-climb briefing will be conducted by one of our operations managers or climbing coordinators. We will also inspect your gear to ensure you’re fully equipped for the climb. If you need any additional gear, we offer rentals. We recommend arriving at least a day before your climb to ensure ample time for your briefing, gear check, and a restful night’s sleep.

Your group

Kilimanjaro-Experience offers scheduled group departures every Friday and additional departures on the Lemosho route every other Thursday. We also accommodate private and custom groups, including for corporate team building, charity events, or special celebrations.

Scheduled group departures typically consist of 5 to 10 climbers and offer the most economical option, giving you a chance to bond with fellow adventurers. If you prefer privacy, you can book a private departure, either for just you and a companion or for a larger group. Private groups can range from 1 to 100 participants.

We offer treks on the Marangu, Lemosho, and Machame routes, with the flexibility to guide private groups on other routes as well.

On the mountain

Mount Kilimanjaro does not have hotels, cable cars, paved paths, or running water. The journey will involve camping, with tents set up by porters at each campsite. If you’re new to camping, this can be an exciting and unique experience. Only the Marangu route has fixed huts; all other routes require camping. Porters not only carry the tents but also the bulk of the heavy gear, including cooking equipment and supplies.

There are no flush toilets, and no running water on the mountain. Washing your face with a basin of warm water, using wet wipes for hygiene, and using long-drop toilets are all part of the experience. Temperature variation is extreme: expect hot, humid conditions in the rainforest and freezing cold, icy rain, and strong winds at higher altitudes. Make sure to bring thermal layers, warm gloves, and thick socks to stay comfortable.

You will pass through five distinct climate zones, from lush rainforest to alpine desert and, finally, the arctic conditions near the summit. Kilimanjaro is renowned for its incredible biodiversity, but some routes may feel more remote and less crowded than others.

Be prepared for altitude-related challenges. The high altitude can affect your body in unexpected ways. You may feel breathless, dizzy, or fatigued, but with the “Pole Pole” (slowly, slowly) mantra in mind, you’ll make steady progress. It’s important to take it easy and listen to your body as you acclimatize.

Sleeping

We recommend bringing your own sleeping bag, though rentals are available. Ensure your sleeping bag is rated for temperatures as low as -12°C (10°F), or bring an extra liner for added warmth. You will sleep in sturdy three-person tents (with only two people per tent to allow extra space for gear) and will have a mat provided for added comfort. Porters will set up the tents before you arrive at each campsite, giving you a well-earned rest after each day’s climb.

Eating and Drinking

Meals are well-prepared and carried up the mountain by our dedicated porters and cooks. While you can bring your own snacks (high-energy foods like chocolate bars, energy bars, and nuts are recommended), we provide three meals a day. Breakfast typically includes eggs, sausages, porridge, bread, and spreads like jam and peanut butter. Lunch is usually a packed meal with sandwiches, boiled eggs, fruit, and juice. Supper is a hearty hot meal with soup, meat, vegetables, starch, and fruit.

Porters will provide purified water throughout your journey, which is boiled and filtered from mountain streams, and served as tea, coffee, or hot chocolate. Hydration is key, so aim to drink at least 3 liters of water per day to minimize altitude sickness symptoms.

Our mess tents, complete with tables, chairs, and proper cutlery, provide a comfortable dining experience. We do not serve alcohol, but tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are available with every meal. We can accommodate vegetarians, people with allergies, and those requiring Kosher or Halal diets if notified in advance. A designated waiter and assistant will serve your meals.

Ablutions

There are no showers on Kilimanjaro, and the water in the streams is extremely cold. You will be provided with warm water in the morning and evening to wash your face and hands. The toilets are basic long-drop facilities, housed in wooden structures at each campsite. For private departures, we include mobile toilets. It’s essential to bring your own toilet paper and wet wipes for personal hygiene.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that combines physical challenge with stunning natural beauty. With the right preparation, a spirit of perseverance, and our support, you’ll be well-equipped to conquer the mountain and enjoy the unforgettable experience of reaching the summit.
